Feathers
Difference between feathers and down
In contrast to soft and voluminous down (underplumage), feathers form the more robust outer plumage on the surface of birds' feathers. Fine down is more valuable than coarser feathers and is more effective for heat retention.
As filling material for duvets and pillows, feathers are only used as an admixture of duck and goose. Feathers have a higher resilience due to their more stable structure (quill and barbs).
Feathers have been used since the Middle Ages for filling pillows, duvets and in clothing.
