Loden

Loden: The Timeless Fabric for Warmth and Comfort

Loden, milled loden, and fulled loden refer to a woolen fabric made from carded yarn, which is compacted in length and width during a washing process by fulling on, for example, fulling washing machines with the help of compression flaps and width flaps, until a closed fabric appearance is achieved.

Tradition and Production of Loden

The fulling process, a traditional and classic method used from the Middle Ages to today in textile production for wool articles, is central to the manufacture of loden. Due to the different coefficients of friction in the longitudinal direction of the wool fibers, they creep into each other and interlock, giving the fabric greater resistance in further processing and use.

Natural Properties and Finishing

Loden utilizes the natural felting properties of wool. These properties are activated by moisture, heat, and mechanics (friction). In further processing, the wool fabrics are usually further refined, e.g., by napping (making it more voluminous), shearing (shearing off protruding hairs from the fabric), and pressing and fixing such as boiler decating, finish decating, depending on the desired effect and application.

The Advantages of Loden Wool Blankets

Durability and Longevity
Loden is known not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its durability. Blankets made from loden wool, such as our popular "Lilienthal" wool blanket, are an excellent investment as they retain their shape and quality for years. They are breathable, hard-wearing, and durable, possess an elegant and natural appearance, and repel rain and wind.

Environmentally Friendly and Sustainable

In a time when sustainability is becoming increasingly important, loden offers an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic fabrics. As a natural material, wool is biodegradable, and the production of loden wool blankets, like "Lilienthal", has a smaller ecological footprint compared to many other textiles.

Applications of Loden in Everyday Life

Typical loden articles are found in traditional wool jackets, coats, folk costumes, skirts, and hunting clothing. By using differently dyed wools before the spinning process, particularly appealing color effects (melanges) are achieved. Fulled loden is also used in the fashion sector due to its unique characteristics, charm, and excellent properties, as also evident in our "Lilienthal" wool blanket.

Loden cloths & fabrics are densely woven, breathable, almost waterproof, hard-wearing in use, and are found, for example, in uniforms (associations), folk costumes, coats, and jackets. They are popular due to their noble appearance, haptics, and special properties.

Conclusion: Loden – An Asset for Every Home

Investing in a loden wool blanket is a decision for quality, comfort, and sustainability. Whether as a cozy addition to your living room or as a warming layer in your bedroom, a loden wool blanket like "Lilienthal" is more than just a home accessory – it is a piece of tradition and craftsmanship that lasts for generations.
