Most house dust mites in living areas are found in mattresses. Skin flakes and mites easily penetrate the open-pored fabric of the mattress and are stirred up with the mite allergen every time the sleeper moves. House dust mite allergy sufferers are therefore strongly advised to completely cover their mattress with a mite-proof encasing. Large quantities of the mite allergen can also be found in upholstered furniture, carpets, soft toys, and in the air (e.g., by stirring up dust when vacuuming).
A down-proof fabric for down bedding acts as a true "mite barrier." This fabric is very densely woven to prevent down and feathers from escaping. House dust mites and human skin flakes, which are the mites' food source, cannot penetrate the fabric.
